I'm not sure if this is the place for this but I figured I should start somewhere. I've been wanting to create robotics projects at home ever since I graduated and found out that you have to have prior experience in fields you want to start out in (makes sense doesn't it?) I was hoping to find some resources, advice, or personal stories on taking first steps in this field.

For context I am 22, poor, and have a bachelor's in Mechanical engineering if that helps at all.

I would recommend that you start by learning automation with systems like Arduino or Raspberry Pi. There is a lot of tutorial that will help you to start and many open source project to get inspired.

You may also find some robot simulator to make some robot manipulation.
    Maybe you can try https://www.coppeliarobotics.com/
