Wanted to share this great case study showing how you can use a UR robot to run a CNC machine.

This was filmed at Whippany. They were first concerned about the security needed around robots, but they were convinced fast by the safety features of the UR robot. They are now planning to install more UR robots on their floor.

Key Elements : 
  • The CNC machine is a Mitsubishi Gear Cutter with Fanuc controls.
  • Hard-wired digital I/O were used to communicate between the robot and the CNC. (A handshaking protocol of communication was used for the setup.)
  • The figertips designed allow to keep the gripper horizontal while grasping the part vertical allowing to proceed in a more restraint space.
  • A manifold was custom designed to clean the fingertips during the operation.
