The 3-Finger Gripper has a built-in controller allowing you to use different options of protocol. When you order your gripper, you need to choose the desire protocol and Robotiq will set it up for you.
Here is a list of the communication protocols available:

The serial communication, Modbus-RTU (via RS232 or RS485), is standard and is always available through the power connector. The other protocols needs the built-in controller and the desire protocol is set up before the delivery by Robotiq.
Changing of Communication Protocol
If you want to change the communication protocol of your 3-Finger Gripper, there is 2 scenarios.
First, if your gripper is set up for a protocol inside the Real-Time-Ethernet family, you will be able to simply reprogram the controller as their is no hardware modification needed. However, you need to contact support in order to get assistance.
Second, if you want to change for any other communication protocol, you need to send the gripper back to Robotiq for an update.
